Allegations of Neglect and High Mortality at Biot Care Home Spur Calls for Urgent Inspection
Families of residents at Les Restanques care home in Biot have raised serious concerns about mistreatment and inadequate care, prompting the local mayor to request an urgent investigation.
In a recent development, three families of residents at the Les Restanques care home in Biot have reported allegations of neglect and abuse.
The facility, managed by the Sud Générations federation, faces scrutiny following allegations concerning the treatment of its elderly residents.
The families have raised grievances involving inadequate care, such as infrequent changing of residents, limited access to nourishments, and issues with food quality.
Further claims include observed malnutrition, inappropriate staff behavior, concealment of significant incidents such as falls, and delays in necessary medical interventions, which reportedly led to a resident's death in November.
Concerns were amplified by reports from a local physician who highlighted that twelve deaths had occurred within six weeks at the facility.
Additionally, 21 residents experienced sudden and significant weight loss, with some losing up to 19kg over the past year.
Families had previously attempted to address these issues with the establishment's management and the Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS), but reported insufficient responses.
The families claim personnel changes within management had occurred three times recently, while their concerns regarding personnel shortages remain unaddressed.
In response, the mayor of Biot, Jean-Pierre Dermit, has formally requested an urgent inspection by the ARS to investigate these claims.
The facility itself has expressed willingness to cooperate fully with the inspection process.
Eric Aiello, president of the association managing Les Restanques, asserted that while the facility acknowledges functional challenges, they strive to provide the best possible care given their resources.
Human resource constraints have been identified at the facility, where the current staffing ratio is 6.9 personnel per 10 residents, below the recommended levels.
Care home management acknowledges difficulties in maintaining qualified and reliable staff due to reliance on temporary personnel, though efforts to recruit full-time nursing staff are underway, aiming to improve the situation by February.
The circumstances at Les Restanques are part of wider systemic challenges in the care home sector, as populations age and require higher levels of care.
These allegations underscore the critical need for effective oversight to ensure the adequacy and dignity of care provided to the elderly.
