Meeting Herculis EBS Earns Silver Label for Environmental Commitment
International recognition for the eco-friendly initiatives of the Monaco event, scheduled for July 11 at the Louis-II Stadium.
The Meeting Herculis EBS has been awarded the prestigious Silver label from the 'Athletics for a Better World Standard' by World Athletics, marking a significant milestone in its environmental commitment.
Following a year of extensive collaboration with the Monaco-based consulting firm ARIMA, the annual athletics event has validated 87 out of 120 criteria set forth by the program.
Launched by World Athletics, the 'Athletics for a Better World Standard' aims to create a structured environmental approach for major athletics events, focusing on six fundamental pillars: leadership, sustainable production, climate and carbon, local environment and air quality, equality and diversity, accessibility, and well-being.
The Meeting Herculis EBS, integrated into this international initiative in 2023, has committed to a comprehensive environmental strategy, supported by ARIMA since 2024. The report submitted in early 2025 confirms the achievement of the Silver label, which requires annual renewal, showing a long-term commitment.
The successful attainment of this label was reinforced by the active support of the Mission for Energy Transition (MTE) of Monaco.
The MTE plays a pivotal role in the Principality’s environmental policy and assists the meeting in executing concrete initiatives that align with international standards.
Since 2023, the Meeting Herculis EBS has collaborated with Gienov, a specialized company, to rigorously measure its carbon footprint.
This scientific approach assesses greenhouse gas emissions across three regulatory scopes: direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect energy-related emissions (Scope 2), and other indirect emissions (Scope 3), including transportation, logistics, waste management, and consumption of goods and services.
This methodology enables the identification of relevant action points, monitoring environmental impacts over editions, and structuring a gradual decarbonization strategy aligned with the event's unique characteristics.
Concrete actions for enhanced sustainability have emerged, illustrated by the introduction of water fountains since 2023, which reduce single-use plastic bottles for both professional athletes and amateur participants.
Moreover, an electric shuttle partnership with Zeekr facilitates transportation for athletes and staff between the airport, hotels, and Louis-II Stadium, effectively minimizing individual taxi journeys.
For spectators, a collaboration with the SNCF has resulted in the provision of special trains in the evening after events, while free local bus services will be offered on the event day.
Local economic integration is central to the strategy, with studies conducted in 2024 indicating that 73.52% of suppliers are based within 25 kilometers of the event.
This approach prioritizes the local economy by engaging partners from various sectors including sports service providers, logistics, accommodations, medical services, and media.
Partnerships with committed nearby hotels further enhance this strategy by reducing transportation emissions.
The Silver label signifies not an endpoint but a stepping stone towards more ambitious environmental objectives.
The eco-responsible initiative of the Meeting Herculis EBS is anchored in a long-term vision, focusing on consolidating field actions and pursuing measured investments for a more sustainable and exemplary sport.
