Patrice Ponza Embarks on Solo Journey Along the Via Alpina to Promote Mental Health Awareness

The famed long-distance trail celebrates its 25th anniversary alongside France's 2025 focus on mental health.
At the age of 50, French adventurer Patrice Ponza has commenced an extraordinary challenge: to traverse the 2,000 kilometers of the Via Alpina, extending from Trieste, Italy, to Monaco.

This remarkable Alpine odyssey is intended to honor the 25th anniversary of the historic trail and contributes to France's national initiative for mental health in 2025.

The Via Alpina, a renowned hiking route, showcases breathtaking landscapes as it connects the blue waters of the Adriatic with the sparkling shores of the Mediterranean.

It holds the status of the longest hiking trail in Europe, featuring an impressive elevation gain of 120,000 meters that exemplifies the essence of adventure.

This iconic trail traverses eight countries: Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, and Monaco.

It intersects national boundaries more than 40 times, revealing remnants of military history that serve as silent witnesses to past conflicts.

In contrast, these mountains currently symbolize peace and unity, where local languages blend, culinary traditions flourish, and customs are passed down through generations.

Each mountain pass and shelter along the route bears its own narrative, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of its human inhabitants.

Patrice Ponza views hiking as an essential tool for mental wellness, stating, "Walking addresses the wounds that afflict our lives.

It serves as a remedy for troubled souls." He emphasizes that hiking across the Alps during this designated year for mental health is a therapeutic endeavor.

Ponza articulates the unique power of walking to help individuals recenter their thoughts and achieve emotional balance.

The solitary act of pacing through the wilderness fosters a conducive environment for reflection and emotional management.

Ponza's solo expedition aligns with the objectives of France's Grande Cause Nationale for 2025. The journey will be documented in a 26-minute film intended for festival showings, along with a book of stories and photographs published by Éditions La Trace in collaboration with CIPRA International.

This documentary aims to inspire both introspection and action, encouraging viewers to reconnect with their inner strength and prioritize mental health amidst a nature-filled backdrop that promotes resilience.

It offers a personal journey that navigates the heart of the Alps, underscoring the significance of walking as a means of advancement towards a serene life.

Patrice Ponza is no stranger to grand expeditions, having previously undertaken a three-year solo bike tour around the world.

His current choice of the Via Alpina serves as a platform for his personal commitment to mental health awareness.

He hopes to educate individuals on the importance of self-care, grounding oneself in the present, and reconnecting with one’s intrinsic nature through this challenge.

As Ponza treads along these legendary paths, he will engage with the vastness of the landscapes and the depth of his own reflections, offering a living testament of this Alpine traverse.

The strenuous climbs, nights spent under the stars, and stunning vistas will present opportunities for reconnection with life's essential truths.

Upon reaching Monaco, he will have traveled more than just a physical distance; he will have charted a course of hope for those seeking equilibrium in an ever-changing world.
