The UN Ocean Conference, co-organized by France and Costa Rica, aims to address ocean protection challenges from June 9-13, 2025.
The 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) is scheduled to take place in Nice, France, from June 9 to June 13, 2025. Co-organized by France and
Costa Rica, this event will bring together global leaders, scientists, NGOs, and businesses to discuss urgent solutions for ocean protection.
The central theme of the conference is "Accelerating Action to Preserve the Ocean", focusing on sustainable use and safeguarding of ocean resources to support sustainable development and combat crises affecting marine environments, including climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss.
UNOC3 aims to gather various stakeholders, including governments, international organizations, NGOs, scientists, businesses, and local communities, to exchange ideas and make decisions to tackle pressing issues related to ocean preservation.
Leading up to the conference, several preparatory events are planned.
Notably:
- The One Ocean Science Congress will occur from June 4 to June 6, 2025, in Nice, engaging scientific discourse on the current state of the ocean.
- The Blue Economy and Finance Forum will take place on June 7 and 8, 2025, in Monaco, addressing the intersections of blue economy and ocean protection financing, with active participation from Prince Albert II.
- A Conference on the Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Coalition will also be held on June 7, 2025, in Nice, focusing on urban resilience against rising sea levels.
These events will facilitate preparations for actionable outcomes to be decided during the main conference.
In preparation for the conference, a global call is underway for civil society voices to be heard.
To date, 125 organizations have contributed ideas, with priorities identified including ocean governance, tracking commitments from previous conferences, and establishing a post-2030 ocean roadmap.
A key focus of UNOC3 will be the Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Coalition, coordinated by the Ocean & Climate Platform, in collaboration with Nice's Mayor Christian Estrosi.
This coalition, launched on June 7, 2025, will consist of coastal cities and regions worldwide, representing over a billion people facing the challenges posed by sea level rise.
The coalition aims to facilitate coastal cities' adaptation strategies to climate change impacts, emphasizing mobilization, knowledge sharing, and financial resources.
