The European Union expresses regret over US tariffs and warns of firm retaliation if targeted.
The European Union has strongly criticized the recent imposition of tariffs by US President
Donald Trump on Canada, Mexico, and China, warning that it will respond 'firmly' if the EU is targeted.
A spokesman for the European Commission stated that Brussels regrets the tariffs, which they argue create economic disruption and contribute to inflation, impacting all parties involved.
The EU had previously sought to avoid a trade conflict through negotiations, but with Trump confirming plans to target the EU in the future, the bloc reaffirmed its stance.
The spokesperson emphasized that the EU remains committed to a low-tariff approach to foster economic growth and stability within a rules-based trading system.
Furthermore, the EU expressed its ongoing commitment to its trade and investment relationship with the United States, the largest such partnership globally, stressing the importance of strengthening bilateral ties.
At present, the EU is not aware of additional tariffs being imposed on its products.
