Telethon 2024 Raises Nearly €97 Million for Rare Genetic Disease Research
The annual fundraising event exceeds previous years' totals, highlighting advances in therapeutic victories.
The Telethon 2024 campaign successfully raised €96,553,593 for research into rare genetic diseases, as reported by the AFM-Telethon organization.
This figure marks an increase from last year's total of €92.9 million.
The Telethon took place over the weekend of November 30 to December 1, 2024, and was sponsored by singer Mika, who has been a prominent figure in previous editions of this annual charity event.
At the conclusion of the main event, the donations received totaled approximately €80 million, with contributions continuing to increase in the weeks following.
The campaign's historic high was reached in 2006, when donations surpassed €106 million.
Laurence Tiennot-Herment, president of AFM-Telethon, remarked on the significance of this year's fundraising effort, stating that it marks a turning point in therapeutic developments, particularly in challenging diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The funds raised during the Telethon specifically target rare diseases, of which 95% remain without treatment or even diagnosis.
This year, the initiative is financing 40 clinical trials currently underway or in preparation, focusing on various disorders including blood, liver, muscle, vision, and immune system diseases.
In addition to its financial impact, the Telethon is recognized for its broad community engagement, taking place across approximately 15,000 municipalities and attracting an audience of 10 million viewers for the 30-hour broadcast on France Televisions.
The next Telethon is scheduled for December 5 and 6, 2025.
