Donald Trump Begins Second Term with Controversial Measures

Trump's early actions include immigration crackdowns, infrastructure plans, and climate policy reversals
On the second day of Donald Trump's second term as President of the United States, he began with a religious service at Washington's National Cathedral.

The service, marked by sobriety in contrast to the previous day's inauguration festivities, included a message from Episcopal Bishop of Washington, Mariann Budde.

She urged the President to show compassion towards those feeling threatened under his administration, including undocumented immigrants and the LGBT+ community.

The previous day, shortly after his inauguration, Trump announced an 'emergency state at the southern border' with Mexico.

This declaration allows for the mobilization of armed forces to address what Trump describes as a 'disastrous invasion.' He declared intentions to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, labeling them as criminals.

In the afternoon, Trump met with Republican congressional leaders to discuss plans for his first 100 days in office.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that a 'major infrastructure announcement' was forthcoming, though specifics were not provided.

Trump also signed several executive orders on immigration, transgender rights, and withdrawing the U.S. from the World Health Organization.

He ordered the removal of over 1,000 individuals appointed by the previous administration, asserting they were not aligned with his vision.

Trump's inauguration speech struck a somber and combative tone, declaring the beginning of an 'American golden age.' The President reiterated a reversal in climate policy, declaring an energy emergency to boost U.S. hydrocarbon production and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement.

Further, Trump made expansive territorial claims about the Panama Canal and the potential acquisition of Greenland, along with ambitions to plant an American flag on Mars.

Notably, Trump issued pardons to over 1,500 supporters involved in the January 6th, 2021, Capitol riot, an event aimed at contesting the certification of Joe Biden's presidential victory.
