Elon Musk and Donald Trump Announce Dramatic Split Amid Public Dispute

The dynamic between the former allies deteriorates in a series of public exchanges.
In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk and Donald Trump have publicly displayed their discord, culminating in a noticeable rift during a press event featuring German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office.

The American president expressed disappointment over Musk's critical stance toward his ambitious budget legislation, which is considered a cornerstone of his administration's agenda.

Trump remarked, "Elon and I had a good relationship.

I don’t know if it’s still the case," referring to Musk, who recently left his role as a special advisor focused on budget cuts.

In response, Musk reacted via social media platform X, calling Trump’s claims "nonsense" in a direct reply to a video in which Trump suggested that Musk's displeasure stemmed from the loss of electric vehicle subsidies.

The tension escalated as Musk categorized Trump's assertions as "false," particularly in regard to Trump's suggestions that Musk was aware of the legislative details in advance.

The budget legislation has been pitched by Trump as a "great and beautiful law," while Musk referred to it as an "abomination." Musk also claimed that Trump would have lost the 2024 election without his support, further accusing him of ingratitude.

This public spat led to a decline in Tesla's stock value on the New York Stock Exchange, reflecting investor concern over the fallout between the two high-profile figures.

As Trump continued to disparage Musk from the Oval Office, describing him as someone who had become hostile after leaving the administration, Musk's influence in Republican circles has been called into question.

The relationship between Trump and Musk has experienced both highs and lows since the billionaire's entry into the political arena last year.

Initially, Trump defended Musk against rising skepticism surrounding his management style during his fiscal austerity mission.

Past displays of loyalty included Trump's commitment to promote Tesla at the White House and Musk's enthusiastic endorsements of the president.

However, cracks began to show as public tensions grew amidst Musk's federal contracts and differing priorities from Trump’s administration.

Compounding this friction was Musk's involvement in a Wisconsin Supreme Court race, where he supported a conservative candidate who ultimately lost, potentially straining his relationship with Trump, known for his aversion to defeat.

Despite this backdrop, Musk has signaled he may not be deterred by the fallout, recently questioning on social media whether it is time to establish a new political party in the United States.
