The French President speaks on environmental issues during a special broadcast amid the UN Ocean Conference.
A large structure has been erected on the Quai Rauba Capeu in Nice, overlooking the Mediterranean, to serve as an expansive television studio for a special France 2 program titled 'Urgence océan, un sommet pour tout changer'.
This event coincides with the ongoing third United Nations Ocean Conference, which began on Monday.
French President Emmanuel Macron was a featured guest on the program, which aired on Tuesday evening and was hosted by Léa Salamé and Hugo Clément.
During the broadcast, President Macron engaged with a panel of notable figures, including astronaut Thomas Pesquet, Olympic athletics champion Marie-José Pérec, underwater photographer and naturalist Laurent Ballesta, and glaciologist Heïdi Sevestre.
The discussions addressed critical issues such as plastic pollution, fast fashion, overfishing, bottom trawling, and glacier melting.
Reflecting on his childhood experiences, Macron described his early encounters with the sea, specifically referencing the English Channel and the Marquenterre in the Bay of Somme, detailing memories of tides and shrimp fishing.
He robustly defended his ecological record, at times expressing irritation at contradictions, while also highlighting key discussions at the Nice summit, including the establishment of marine protected areas and the BBNJ treaty (Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction), which aims to safeguard the high seas.
Macron made a notable remark regarding the absence of
Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, from the conference, suggesting that the reluctance of one stakeholder should not impede necessary environmental actions: "It’s not because a co-owner does not want to pay that we cannot carry out the works."
The evening also featured an exchange between host Hugo Clément and Macron concerning Christophe Castaner, a former Interior Minister and current strategic advisor at Shein.
Additionally, Anne-Sophie Roux, a whistleblower on seabed mining exploitation, shared her insights, alongside a message from Brazilian leader Raoni.
