French Assembly Members Display Palestinian Children's Images During Heated Session
La France insoumise deputies highlight the plight of Palestinian children, sparking controversy in the National Assembly.
In a significant parliamentary display, deputies from La France insoumise (LFI) presented images of Palestinian children in the National Assembly on April 8, 2025. This action occurred during a government question session led by the Assembly's president, Yaël Braun-Pivet, who emphasized the prohibition against displaying posters in the chamber and announced that she would consult the Assembly's Bureau for further action.
The incident was triggered by a question posed by LFI deputy Aymeric Caron concerning the ongoing situation in Gaza.
During his remarks, Caron stated, "Never in recent history have children been massacred in such numbers," holding up a photo of a young girl purportedly killed in her sleep due to a bombing.
His statement aimed to humanize the victims of the conflict, asserting, "Like our children, they have a name, they have a face, they have a life to live." Following Caron's lead, several other LFI deputies raised similar posters displaying the faces of other children.
This act incited backlash from members of the National Rally (RN) and The Republicans (LR), with RN's Kévin Pfeffer accusing the Assembly of complicity and expressing outrage at the scenes unfolding before him.
The controversy heightened as Benjamin Haddad, the Minister Delegate for Europe, criticized the LFI's actions, describing them as exaggerated and caricatured.
He reaffirmed France's commitment to dialogue and peace, suggesting that LFI's portrayal of the situation was politically motivated and detrimental.
The session illustrated the deepening divisions within French politics regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as rhetoric escalates amidst ongoing debates surrounding humanitarian issues in Gaza.
