Record-Low Danube Exposes Probable Mammoth Remains in Bulgaria
A resident near Ryahovo found bones on the newly exposed riverbed as a severe Central European drought disrupted shipping, tourism and energy operations.
The Danube’s record-low water level has exposed what specialists believe may be the remains of an ancient mammoth near the northern Bulgarian village of Ryahovo, turning a stark sign of drought into a potentially important palaeontological discovery.
A local resident spotted the bones on the riverbed after the receding water revealed ground normally hidden beneath the river.
Specialists from the Regional History Museum in the nearby city of Ruse examined the find and made a preliminary identification of a lower jaw, two tusks and what may be a rib.
The identification is not yet final.
The remains are being removed for closer examination to establish their age, species and provenance.
Nikolay Nenov, the museum’s director, said the discovery should not be overstated, but that ancient remains of this kind carry clear scientific value.
Researchers have long considered the location to have been marshland, where the animal may have died thousands of years ago.
The find has emerged during an exceptionally severe drought across Central and Eastern Europe.
Persistent heat and a prolonged lack of rain have driven the Danube to unprecedented lows along sections of its course, exposing sandbanks, rocks and old wrecks while limiting navigation.
The consequences extend far beyond archaeology.
In Budapest, the river has fallen below its previous recorded low, while cargo vessels have faced restrictions or suspensions and tourist cruises have been disrupted.
A cruise ship ran aground near the Bulgarian city of Vidin, temporarily stranding its passengers.
Lower water levels have also strained energy systems dependent on the river for cooling and transport.
The Danube runs from Germany’s Black Forest to the Black Sea, crossing or forming borders for ten countries.
Its reduced flow has therefore become a regional economic and environmental concern rather than a local anomaly.
