The French Ministry of Health emphasizes vaccination and preventive measures as flu cases surge.
The French Ministry of Health has issued a call for heightened vigilance in response to the intense circulation of the seasonal flu virus, which is significantly impacting hospitals across mainland France and overseas regions like Martinique and Guadeloupe.
According to a statement from the Directorate General of Health (DGS), the epidemic is causing a high level of hospital activity across all age groups.
This situation has prompted the activation of around one hundred 'white plans' nationwide, which are measures designed to manage health service demands during crises.
Notably, about 80% of severe flu cases requiring intensive care concern unvaccinated individuals, underscoring the importance of vaccination efforts.
The DGS stresses the ongoing need for vaccination, particularly for those aged 65 and over and individuals with comorbidities.
Vaccination is also recommended for those in close contact with these groups, as well as healthcare and social sector professionals.
The ministry assures that sufficient
vaccine doses, including the Vaxigrip Tetra by Sanofi, are available across pharmacies to continue inoculations through the end of January.
Despite some reports of supply shortages, efforts are being made to redistribute
vaccine stocks among pharmacies.
Philippe Besset, president of the FSPF pharmacy union, noted that while 30% of pharmacies had run out of
vaccines, they are collaborating to share resources in anticipation of additional supplies from manufacturers such as Sanofi.
In addition to vaccination, the ministry underscores the importance of maintaining barrier gestures to prevent respiratory infections.
Recommendations include wearing masks when experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever, or sore throat, and also in crowded places and healthcare settings to protect vulnerable groups.
