Authorities classify the case as a serious hate crime amid rising tensions in the region.
The murder of Hichem Miraoui, a 35-year-old Tunisian man, has provoked significant concern and led to an extensive investigation in France.
Miraoui's body was discovered in Puget-sur-Argens, where he resided, with five gunshot wounds.
A Turkish national was injured during the incident, which has raised alarm about potential underlying motives.
A neighbor of the victim, born in 1971, has been identified as the prime suspect and is currently in police custody.
The authorities, upon apprehending him, discovered a cache of weaponry including an automatic pistol, a shotgun, and a handgun in his vehicle, according to a statement from the Draguignan prosecutor's office.
The investigation has been taken up by the anti-terrorism prosecutor's office, indicating the seriousness with which this incident is being treated.
Mourad Battikh, the family's attorney, emphasized that this is far from a simple crime of passion or an isolated incident.
He stated, "We are faced with an ideology, we are faced with a premeditation," suggesting further investigation into potential influences behind the suspect's actions.
Battikh pointed out that the suspect had posted two videos on
Facebook, described as "racist and hateful," in which he allegedly pledged allegiance to the French flag and incited violence against those of foreign origin.
In the context of rising tensions, the French Minister of the Interior has condemned the murder as a "racist" and "premeditated" crime.
He remarked that, "Every racist act is an antifrançais act," underscoring the perceived threat posed by racism in France.
The Minister's comments were made after discussions with Prime Minister François Bayrou and a phone conversation with the Tunisian ambassador to France.
The Minister also engaged in a discussion with his Tunisian counterpart, Khaled Nouri, who expressed strong condemnation of the murder and requested measures to ensure the safety of Tunisian nationals in France.
Battikh, who previously represented relatives of victims of racial violence, has raised concerns regarding the broader political climate in France, hinting at societal factors that may contribute to such violent incidents.
