Monaco Observes World Environment Day with a Focus on Plastic Pollution
On June 5, 2025, Monaco will host a range of activities aimed at raising awareness and combating plastic pollution as part of World Environment Day.
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, serves as a global platform for raising awareness and promoting action for the protection of the earth and its oceans.
This year, the United Nations has designated 'Combating Plastic Pollution' as the key theme.
Since its inception in 1974, the event has been celebrated in over 100 countries, emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability.
Monaco’s government has implemented numerous measures to address plastic use, including a ban on plastic bags since 2016 and a gradual prohibition on single-use plastic packaging.
Initiatives to educate the public on alternatives to plastic and beach clean-ups have further developed over the years.
To commemorate World Environment Day, the Department of the Environment in Monaco will set up a stand at the foot of Rue Princesse Caroline, operational from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. A range of engaging activities has been organized to facilitate public participation and education.
From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, the Department of Environment and Ecoscience Provence will present solutions and alternatives to single-use plastics, educate on identifying misleading environmental solutions, and outline the daily actions taken by local businesses and restaurants.
Attendees will have opportunities to participate in 'zero plastic' workshops and engage in discussions on biodiversity and environmental protection.
The Green Box Monaco initiative will showcase its reusable logistics solutions from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Furthermore, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, the Direction of Tourism and Congress will provide insights into waste sorting for foreign visitors, accompanied by a guide on sustainable tourism initiatives in the Principality.
Ecoslowasting will share insights about its anti-waste platform from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The afternoon will feature discussions from Laurent Peyronnel representing the Animal Garden, along with information about 'Ma Consigne,' presented by the Mission for the Energy Transition, which highlights the health and environmental benefits of this initiative from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Finally, from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, the Municipality of Monaco will present its 'Petite boîte' program, aimed at reducing food waste in local restaurants.
This comprehensive set of activities reflects Monaco's ongoing commitment to environmental issues and its proactive stance on promoting sustainable practices in alignment with global environmental goals.
