New statistics reveal growth in Monaco's private sector employment amidst cross-border commuting.
As of 2024, Monaco has experienced significant growth in its private sector labor force, now totaling 60,454 employees, an increase of 2,128 individuals or 3.6% compared to 2023. The data, released by the Monaco Statistics Institute (IMSEE), highlights the dynamics of the labor market in the Principality.
Notably, the workforce comprises 1,561 men and 567 women who were recruited in the past year.
The commuting patterns of the private sector workforce are notable, with approximately 80% of the employees residing in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France.
Of the total workforce, around 48,363 individuals commute daily to their jobs in Monaco, with a significant portion living in neighboring municipalities such as Cap d’Ail, Beausoleil, and Èze.
In addition, about 5,441 employees, or 9% of the workforce, are living in Italy, while only about 6,000, or 10%, are residents of Monaco itself.
Employment in Monaco reflects a rich cultural diversity, with 145 different nationalities represented in the labor market.
The majority of the workforce, over 90%, comprises European nationals.
French citizens form the largest group, accounting for approximately 36,800 employees, or 61%.
Italians represent 15% of the workforce with just over 9,000 employees, while Portuguese nationals make up 7%, with around 4,200 individuals working in Monaco.
Among the total number of employees in the private sector, only 1,014, or 2%, are of Monegasque nationality, a figure that has remained relatively stable over the years.
In terms of business presence in Monaco, there are 6,355 employers, with 2,665 hiring domestic staff, including housekeepers, chauffeurs, and cooks.
