Monaco's Telealarm Service: A Lifeline for Seniors
A comprehensive safety and communication solution for Monaco's elderly
Monaco has implemented a telealarm system designed to provide around-the-clock safety for its senior residents.
This service, offered by the Monaco Municipality, integrates modern technology with prompt responsiveness to manage emergencies and support independent living for seniors aged 60 and above.
The telealarm system primarily comprises wearable devices such as bracelets or medallions, which allow users to trigger an emergency alert at any time.
These devices can be supplemented with additional equipment such as shower pull cords and smoke detectors depending on the user's dependency level.
A transmitter installed in the user’s home connects these devices to a teleassistance software managed by the Municipality during office hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays, excluding weekends and holidays).
Outside these hours, the system connects directly to the local fire services, ensuring 24/7 coverage.
Eligibility for the service is based on a medical prescription, and all senior residents of Monaco aged 60 and above can apply.
Upon application, a home visit is arranged to confirm the necessary technical conditions for installation.
The Municipality collaborates with Monaco Telecom for fiber installation, and a local service provider conducts maintenance operations when needed.
As of December 2024, there are 580 equipped households serving 648 beneficiaries.
The system's effectiveness has been demonstrated in numerous incidents, such as timely interventions following falls or medical emergencies that required immediate assistance.
The service, which incurs a fee decided based on the applicant's income, includes the provision of equipment and a monthly subscription managed by the Seniors and Social Action Service.
Feedback from users and their families has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the quick response times and the reassurance it provides.
The Municipality plans to enhance the system further by rolling out fiber/4G devices to all currently equipped households in 2025, aiming to improve the security of these installations.
Interested seniors or their families can register for the service by contacting the Seniors and Social Action Service.
