OGC Nice Suffers Home Defeat to Nantes in Ligue 1 Clash

Consistent possession fails to secure points as Nice falls 2-1 to Nantes.
NICE, FRANCE – OGC Nice experienced a disappointing outcome at home on Friday, April 4, 2025, falling to FC Nantes 2-1 in the opening match of the 28th round of Ligue 1. Despite maintaining a dominant possession rate of 76%, Nice struggled to convert opportunities into goals, reflecting ongoing challenges in the league.

The match witnessed Nice creating numerous chances throughout but ultimately only managed to score once.

Gaëtan Laborde, despite several attempts, was unable to capitalize on opportunities, with Nantes’ goalkeeper, Anthony Lopes, delivering a standout performance.

Nantes took the lead early in the match, marking a turning point for the hosts.

Goalkeeper Marcin Bułka was positioned behind his defense during Nantes' opening goal and was criticized for his inability to secure a firm grip on the initial strike.

Notably, the second goal from Nantes came from a close-range effort by Albine, which Bułka could not avert but did not have much opportunity to save otherwise due to limited involvement.

Player ratings after the match indicated mixed performances.

Bułka received a score of 4 for his performance, while defender Youcef Atal scored a 5, having not made any errors but failing to significantly strengthen the team's defensive issues.

Defender Nicolas Cozza, known for his contributions this season, was rated at 4, having struggled against Nantes’ Simon, who delivered the assist for the first goal; however, a highlight was his recovery to deny a clear chance later in the match.

The Egyptian defender Mahmoud Abdelmonem rated at 4 after a lackluster first pass but displayed improved efforts in duels as the game progressed.

Midfielder Pierre Lees-Melou, who managed to score for Nice, was noted for his effective plays and received a 6 for his contributions, including a well-timed equalizer.

However, his efforts after the first half were less impactful.

Nicolas Pépé's involvement led to a score of 4 in the attacking line, characterized by lack of composure in critical moments.

Laborde, demonstrating initiative, was equally rated at 5, managing opportunities against Lopes but ultimately failing to break through.

The match rating overall stood at 5, with ratings reflecting a lack of decisiveness and success from tactical setups employed by the coaching staff.

The referee’s performance received a low rating of 3, citing controversy over decisions made throughout the game.

As OGC Nice continues its pursuit in Ligue 1, these ongoing challenges may further complicate their standing in the competition.
