Israeli Navy Intercepts 'Madleen' En Route to Gaza, Protests Erupt in France
The interception of the humanitarian vessel carrying food supplies has sparked demonstrations calling for the release of the crew and accountability from international bodies.
On June 9, 2025, the Israeli Navy intercepted and redirected the vessel 'Madleen', which was reportedly carrying supplies intended for Gaza.
The ship, which included activist Greta Thunberg and journalist Rima Hassan among its passengers, departed on June 1 with the mission to 'break the Israeli blockade' imposed on Gaza, a region facing a dire humanitarian crisis exacerbated by prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The interception occurred as the ship was en route to Gaza, where conditions have deteriorated significantly due to ongoing warfare and blockades.
Following the intercept, the Israeli Ministry of Defense confirmed that the vessel was diverted to the port of Ashdod, a major commercial port in southern Israel located near Gaza.
Passengers aboard the ship are expected to be disembarked at this location.
French President Emmanuel Macron, upon learning of the incident, urged for the prompt return of the six French nationals onboard.
He emphasized the need for their safe and rapid repatriation to France.
In response to the interception, protests have erupted across France, organized primarily by the political movement La France Insoumise (LFI).
On the evening of June 9, rallies were planned in various cities, including a significant demonstration scheduled to take place at 6:00 PM in Paris's Place de la République, where participants aim to demand the 'release' of the crew and the continuation of humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
Additionally, a 'support' gathering was set to occur at 6:30 PM at the Centenaire beach in Nice, directly facing the Albert 1er Garden, as declared by the regional branch of LFI in the Alpes-Maritimes.
A statement issued by the party emphasized the call for condemnation from states, the European Union, the United Nations, and the international community as a whole regarding the interception.
They stated, 'Solidarity is not a crime.
Release the crew of the Freedom Flotilla!'
The situation remains fluid as international responses to the incident continue to unfold.
