Norris secures his first win of the season in a tightly contested race at Albert Park, while Verstappen and Russell complete the podium.
Lando Norris of McLaren emerged victorious in the Australian Grand Prix held at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, marking his first win of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Starting from pole position, Norris successfully navigated inclement weather and maintained his lead despite significant pressure from two-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing.
The race saw dramatic fluctuations in conditions, with earlier rain making the track slippery and challenging for drivers.
Norris acknowledged the intensity of the competition, stating, "It was incredible, a high-level race, especially with Max behind me.
It was a bit stressful, I won’t lie."
Verstappen, who finished second, reflected on the challenges posed by the changing conditions, asserting that the competition was enjoyable despite his close pursuit of Norris in the race's closing laps.
He stated, "Lando had a bit of a scare, which is why I came closer, but it was fun...
to fight for the victory."
Mercedes driver George Russell rounded out the podium in third place, while Alexander Albon of Williams finished in fourth.
On the other hand, Oscar Piastri, the local favorite and McLaren teammate of Norris, faced difficulties after leading earlier in the race.
He slipped off the track, resulting in a ninth-place finish.
Piastri, with more than 130,000 fans cheering him on, expressed disappointment over his performance, saying, "I felt I had a very good pace in all conditions, that’s what I will take from this weekend."
Lewis Hamilton, now racing for Ferrari, had a challenging debut for his new team, finishing in 10th place.
Hamilton’s teammate, Charles Leclerc, managed to secure eighth position, but both faced a strategic misstep during the race, as they were called to the pits too late when rain returned.
This year's grid featured significant changes, including Hamilton's transfer to Ferrari and several rookies making their debut.
Notably, 20-year-old Isack Hadjar made headlines when he had to retire from the race before it began due to a crash during the formation lap.
This unfortunate incident was echoed by Jack Doohan, who lost control of his Alpine early in the race.
Carlos Sainz, having transitioned to Williams after four seasons with Ferrari, also did not complete the race, crashing on the first lap.
In contrast, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a rookie at
Mercedes, finished a commendable fifth in his first F1 race, being one of the few drivers to see the finish line.
Other newcomers faced similar challenges, with a number of retirements due to on-track errors.
As the race concluded, Pierre Gasly of Alpine finished in 11th, while Esteban Ocon, a new signing for Haas, came in 13th.
The performance at this opening Grand Prix highlighted the competitive nature of the current season, with several teams showcasing strong performances amid rapidly changing conditions.
