Ledger Co-founder Files Complaint Over Privacy Violations Following Kidnapping Incident
David Balland, who was kidnapped in January, has submitted a legal complaint against media outlets for breaching investigation confidentiality.
David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, a French company specializing in cryptocurrency assets, announced on Monday that he has filed a complaint for violation of the confidentiality of the investigation.
The announcement comes after he and his partner were kidnapped and held for ransom in January.
In a statement, Balland conveyed the trauma of their experience and criticized the media coverage surrounding their ordeal.
In detailing his experience, the 36-year-old Balland expressed that the violence he faced was unimaginable, extending into media articles that he claims violated both the investigation's confidentiality and their personal privacy.
Balland's complaint was filed on April 4 and includes allegations of breach of investigation secrecy and concealment, as indicated by the deposit receipt obtained.
He emphasized that while he understands the public's interest in the incident and the necessity to inform on crimes to prevent recurrence, he opposes the sensationalism that he feels has characterized reporting on his case.
He pointed out that since the ordeal began on January 21, he has not publicly commented nor sought media attention, which he described as overwhelming for him and his family.
On the morning of January 21, Balland and his partner were kidnapped from their home in Méreau, Cher.
The alarm was raised by Eric Larchevêque, another co-founder of Ledger, who received a disturbing video showing a severed finger belonging to Balland, along with a ransom demand in cryptocurrency.
The image, part of a radiographic report revealing the injury, was later distributed by various media outlets.
Balland was held captive in Châteauroux and was liberated on January 22. His partner was discovered tied up in the trunk of a vehicle in Essonne the following day.
Legal proceedings are currently underway, with at least six men and one woman, aged between 20 and 40, facing charges related to the kidnapping, including abduction and confinement with torture or acts of barbarism as part of a criminal conspiracy.
Balland's attorney, Me Karim Beylouni, expressed concern about the implications of media leaks, which he states have exposed significant elements of the legal procedure and pose a risk to ongoing investigations.
Beylouni characterized the media violations as severe, compounding the trauma experienced by his client.
He pledged to pursue legal action should similar breaches occur in the future.
Balland stated, "We are not paper characters.
We are a family with the right to live and rebuild in peace." Ledger, founded in 2014, is recognized as a 'unicorn,' a startup with a valuation exceeding one billion dollars, and is a global leader in developing physical cryptocurrency wallets that allow users to manage their assets directly.
