Melvyn Jaminet Returns to Rugby After Suspension, Expresses Growth and Reflection

The Toulon back discusses his comeback and personal development at a press conference following a 26-week suspension for racist remarks.
Melvyn Jaminet has resumed his rugby career with Toulon after serving a 26-week suspension due to racist comments made during the France national team’s tour of Argentina in July 2024. Since returning to play at the end of February 2025, Jaminet has participated in nine matches, including five as a starter, scoring five tries.

In a rare press appearance on May 30, 2025, Jaminet addressed the media for the first time since his suspension, highlighting his focus on improving his mental resilience during his absence from competition.

Jaminet stated, "During my absence, I worked, notably on the mental aspects.

When I returned, I didn’t feel particular pressure; I just wanted to play rugby again."

Jaminet's performance has showcased a notable resurgence, with an 85.37% success rate in goal-kicking and improved gameplay, marking a significant return to form.

His teammate, Matthias Halagahu, commended Jaminet for his contributions on the field, stating, "Melvyn provides us with significant experience and quality in his kicking game.

He puts pressure on opponents, which is vital for our strategy."

Head coach Pierre Mignoni also noted Jaminet's unique situation, mentioning that the player is relatively fresh compared to teammates who have endured a full season, suggesting that he has acquired maturity through his experiences both on and off the field.

In addition to focusing on athletics, Jaminet utilized his time during the suspension for introspection and community engagement, working with young rugby players.

He reflected on these interactions, stating, "I had the opportunity to discuss rugby and career management with young players, something I had never done before.

It ultimately proved beneficial for me."

Eleven months after the incident in Argentina, Jaminet indicates a readiness to move past the chapter of his life marked by controversy, emphasizing a desire to move forward while acknowledging the lessons learned from his experiences.
