Menton Sun Race Set for Record Participation This Weekend
Event features new trail races and a children's competition, with over 1,400 runners expected.
The Menton Sun Race, organized by the Menton-Marathon association, is poised to break attendance records during its 39th edition this weekend in Menton, France.
This year, the event introduces two new trail races on Saturday, the Roc d’Ormea, encompassing challenging distances of 14 km with a 780-meter elevation gain and 34 km with a 2,000-meter elevation gain.
As of five days before the event, over 400 participants have registered for these races.
Additionally, the event includes a dedicated segment for children with the Run Young Athletes competition scheduled for Saturday at 18:00. This segment will feature four distances—1,000 m, 1,500 m, 2,000 m, and 3,000 m—and expects to attract more than 300 young athletes.
The centerpiece of the weekend will occur on Sunday with the Ronde des Plages, which opens with a new 5 km timed walk along the seafront at 8:00, already attracting 62 registrants.
The day’s main races include a FFA-certified 10 km race at 09:00, which is a qualifying event for the French Championships, and a non-qualifying 5 km race at 10:15. With 1,414 runners registered for the 10 km race as of Monday, the event is on track to surpass its previous record of 1,250 participants, with expectations to exceed 1,500.
Jean-Michel Fauritte, president of Menton-Marathon, stated, "We have exceeded our forecasts, so we have opened registrations for a no-t-shirt, no-medal option but with all the necessary services." Late registrations will be accepted up to 30 minutes before the start of each race.
This year’s edition of the Sun Race promises unprecedented services, including bike storage, childcare facilities, club tents, and a festive atmosphere, reinforcing its reputation as a significant running event.
