National Tribute to Firefighters Who Died in Laon Blaze
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau leads a solemn ceremony honoring two volunteer firefighters who lost their lives during an apartment fire in Laon.
On June 16, 2025, a national tribute was held in Laon, Aisne, for two volunteer firefighters who tragically lost their lives while responding to an apartment fire.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau attended the ceremony, where he honored the bravery and civic commitment of the deceased firefighters, Tangui Mosin, 22, and Maxime Prud'homme, 23, who were buried under the debris after the building's collapse during the emergency response.
Minister Retailleau spoke emotionally about the two firefighters, recalling Mosin’s penchant for knee-high socks and his perpetual struggle with a malfunctioning vape, and Prud'homme's tender demeanor masked by a seemingly grumpy exterior.
Prud'homme was noted as a father to a young daughter.
The ceremony took place at Place d'Armes in La Fère, where the deceased firefighters were stationed.
Hundreds of their colleagues stood in solemn tribute until the arrival of the coffins, adorned with the French flag, firefighting helmets, and several posthumous decorations.
Under the sun, the gathered units paid homage to Mosin and Prud'homme, both of whom had joined the firefighting ranks in 2020.
Retailleau emphasized the deep bond shared by the two men, stating, "In this tragic mission, their union did not falter: they committed themselves together, they fell together, and they were found together, just a few meters apart, seemingly sharing a final gesture of brotherhood."
In acknowledgment of their sacrifice, both firefighters were posthumously awarded the title of Knight in the Legion of Honor.
Prior to this official tribute, multiple expressions of respect and solidarity had surfaced, including a minute of silence observed by members of the French Parliament the previous week.
The incident adds to a grim tally in the Aisne region, coming just over a year after another volunteer firefighter, Jérémie Fontaine, lost his life in a traffic accident while en route to an emergency intervention in February 2024. In France, there were over 197,000 volunteer firefighters by the end of 2021, representing 78% of the national firefighting workforce, often balancing their volunteer roles with other professional commitments.
