Seventeen-Year-Old Arrested for Attempted Murder of Classmate in Dijon
The arrest follows social media threats of violence and the discovery of weapons at the student's home.
A 17-year-old student in Dijon, France, has been taken into police custody for attempted murder after making threats on social media regarding a plan to kill another female student, according to police sources.
The student was arrested on Wednesday at his school, following an investigation initiated by his online statements.
Upon searching the student’s home, officers discovered a knife concealed in a school folder, which confirmed the alleged intention behind the threats.
The accused had reportedly expressed on social media his desire to kill another student who had allegedly labeled some of his friends as rapists.
However, the assailant claimed to have abandoned his plan when he did not see her at the school cafeteria and later made comments in an online forum that echoed those of so-called 'incel' ideology, which refers to individuals who struggle to form romantic relationships and may develop hostility towards women.
The initial charges of ‘threat of death materialized in writing’ were escalated, with prosecutors reclassifying the case to include charges of attempted murder and the illegal possession of a Category D weapon within a school setting.
Olivier Caracotch, the public prosecutor in Dijon, noted that he would not provide information on the outcome of the custody, stating that the case involved a minor.
Further searches at the suspect's home also revealed an axe, reinforcing statements he made about initially planning to kill with it before opting for the knife, which he had previously smuggled into the school.
This incident follows a recent tragic case in Nantes, where a 15-year-old student was fatally stabbed by a fellow 16-year-old classmate in a private school, leading to heightened concerns about safety in educational environments.
The attacker in that case was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation after the incident, which also resulted in three additional injuries.
