The Monaco community is in mourning following a tragic accident that occurred late Saturday night, resulting in the death of Lorenzo Renou, a promising 17-year-old basketball player for AS Monaco.
The incident took place on the A8 motorway near Cannet-des-Maures around 3 AM on Sunday, May 11. Reports indicate that the minibus carrying the AS Monaco National 3 basketball team veered off its path, leading to a loss of control.
Initial findings suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Lorenzo Renou, who was from Gironde and attended the Albert I High School in Monaco, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
Five other individuals, including the team’s coach, three players, and the driver were injured, as confirmed by AS Monaco Basketball in a statement shortly after the tragedy.
The Draguignan prosecutor's office has initiated an inquiry into involuntary manslaughter and bodily harm.
Preliminary results indicate that the driver tested negative for drug use.
