Tragic Fatal Accident Claims Life of Young AS Monaco Basketball Player

Lorenzo Renou, 17, dies in a minibus accident while returning from a basketball match; authorities investigate the incident.
The Monaco community is in mourning following a tragic accident that occurred late Saturday night, resulting in the death of Lorenzo Renou, a promising 17-year-old basketball player for AS Monaco.

The incident took place on the A8 motorway near Cannet-des-Maures around 3 AM on Sunday, May 11. Reports indicate that the minibus carrying the AS Monaco National 3 basketball team veered off its path, leading to a loss of control.

Initial findings suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Lorenzo Renou, who was from Gironde and attended the Albert I High School in Monaco, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Five other individuals, including the team’s coach, three players, and the driver were injured, as confirmed by AS Monaco Basketball in a statement shortly after the tragedy.

The Draguignan prosecutor's office has initiated an inquiry into involuntary manslaughter and bodily harm.

Preliminary results indicate that the driver tested negative for drug use.

The sudden loss has elicited widespread expressions of grief and support from various sectors of the Monaco community.

Prince Albert II released a statement expressing heartfelt condolences, saying, "I learned with deep sadness of the tragic accident involving the AS Monaco basketball National 3 team.

My family and I extend our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of the tragically departed player.

My thoughts are also with the injured, and I offer my support to all those affected by this tragedy." The Princely Government responded with deep emotion, and the mayor of Monaco similarly expressed sorrow.

Thomas Brezzo, President of the National Council, also shared his condolences: "It is with profound emotion that I learned of the tragic death of Lorenzo Renou.

Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and others injured in this accident.

The National Councillors extend their support to everyone severely affected by this tragedy, especially those from the sporting and educational communities." In light of this heartbreaking event, a solidarity fund has been established to support Lorenzo’s family.

A close associate of the young player initiated the crowdfunding effort, stating: "With immense sadness, we share the tragic news of Lorenzo's death.

His kindness, smile, and presence will remain forever in our hearts.

During this painful moment, we wish to assist his family, who are experiencing unimaginable pain.

All funds collected will be directly given to his family to help them through this difficult time, whether for funeral expenses or simply to allow them to cope without financial worries.

Every gesture counts, no matter the amount.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support, thoughts, and generosity." By 1 PM on May 12, the campaign had raised over €10,300.

A minute of silence was observed last night at the Gaston Médecin stadium, where the entire AS Monaco Basketball family gathered to support one another during this challenging time.

The club expressed its condolences via social media, stating, "Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones." A banner was also displayed within the arena, reading, "Rest in peace, Lorenzo.

Courage to the injured."
