Alexandra Masson advocates for Mediterranean issues at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice.
The United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3) is currently taking place in Nice, France, from June 9 to June 13, 2025. The conference aims to facilitate global dialogue on ocean-related issues to ensure sustainable practices and protect marine environments.
Alexandra Masson, a member of the National Rally and representative for the 4th district, is set to address the conference on behalf of her party, emphasizing the importance of the Mediterranean Sea in France's maritime policy.
Masson highlighted that the Mediterranean should not be overlooked when discussing oceanic policies, arguing that this 'nourishing sea' faces significant environmental threats.
Despite constituting only 1% of the world's ocean surface, the Mediterranean Sea is home to approximately 7% of the world's microplastics, underscoring its critical state.
During her address, Masson intends to propose a series of initiatives aimed at elevating the status of the Mediterranean within international marine priorities.
These include advocating for the recognition of the Mediterranean as a strategic funding priority on par with tropical regions.
She also plans to suggest that ecological conditionality be a requirement for European and UN aid, focusing on issues such as marine pollution, unsustainable dredging practices, and the proliferation of plastic waste.
Additionally, she is expected to call for increased support for scientific research related to coastal areas and artisanal fishing, as well as the establishment of a European label entitled 'Exemplary Maritime Territory.' This label would aim to acknowledge local governments that successfully balance ecological considerations with innovation and good governance practices.
Masson described her vision of 'political ecology,' which emphasizes protection without punishment, regulation without exclusion, and defense of freedoms and traditions.
She asserted that ecological initiatives must engage local communities and respect regional identities.
In her view, France's maritime presence should be clear and assertive at the conference, advocating for the Mediterranean's needs with both pride and clarity.
