Var's Image Encounters Await in Pierrefeu-du-Var

The Rencontres varoises de l’image will transform into a festival format featuring workshops, master classes, and a photo contest for youth.
The Rencontres varoises de l’image, organized by Focale Pierrefeu under the leadership of Jean-Luc Canova, is set to take place from May 16 to 18 at the Espace Bouchonnerie in Pierrefeu-du-Var.

This year, the event has evolved from a simple exhibition into a comprehensive festival, incorporating master classes, workshops, and conferences led by established professionals in the field of photography.

Notable participants include Dominique Agius, a renowned photographer and educator, who will conduct a session focused on portraiture and lighting on Saturday, May 17, from 2 PM to 3 PM. Additionally, Jean-Philippe Pichon, a specialist in jazz, is scheduled to offer a master class on performance photography on Friday, May 16, at 8:30 PM, coinciding with a live concert by the Flash Light quartet starting at 9 PM. Canova emphasized the novelty of incorporating a concert into the program as a way to bridge different artistic disciplines.

A highlight of this edition is the photo contest aimed at young photographers, which has garnered attention for its impressive entries.

Canova expressed his admiration for the quality of submissions, sharing an example of a photograph inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson produced by a young contestant, reflecting a profound level of creativity and insight.

The contest aims to align with educational initiatives focused on visual literacy, encouraging participants to take the time to analyze and interpret images in a fast-paced world.

A lineup of speakers includes Thierry de Villeneuve, a history enthusiast and collector of photographs from the Provence landings, who will deliver a lecture on photography and memory on Saturday, May 17, at 5 PM. Additionally, Christian Gérini, an expert in street art, will conduct a workshop and presentation on this theme on Sunday, May 18, at 3 PM, just prior to the award ceremony for the Défi Jeunes contest.

Throughout the three-day festival, various exhibitions and slideshow presentations will take place, fostering intergenerational interactions and potentially inspiring new careers in photography.

The Rencontres Varoises de l’Image is scheduled for May 16, 17, and 18 at the Espace Bouchonnerie in Pierrefeu-du-Var, with free entry to most events and a concert ticket priced at 10 euros.
