Censorship and Controversy: Exhibition Canceled in Andorra
An exhibition on censorship featuring a controversial Charlie Hebdo cover was canceled over security concerns.
An exhibition on censorship was abruptly canceled on May 22, 2025, in Andorra after the mayor of Escaldes-Engordany prohibited the display of a cover from Charlie Hebdo that depicted a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.
The decision was made by Mayor Rosa Gili, who cited her concerns for the national security of Andorra and expressed her reluctance to have 'blood on [her] conscience.' Gili stated, 'I did not want to take any risks,' while speaking to the press.
Further explaining her stance, Gili referenced her 'personal background,' which provided her with a 'particular sensitivity' towards representations such as that of the Prophet Muhammad.
This action drew attention to the complexities surrounding freedom of expression and religious sensitivities in a region known for its unique political structure.
Andorra is governed by a co-principality, where the Bishop of La Seu d'Urgell and the French president share leadership roles.
Following the prohibition of the controversial artwork, the municipality decided to withdraw the piece from the exhibition titled 'Censorship is the Commissioner of this Exhibition.' As a result, the organizer, the Museum of Forbidden Art in Barcelona, announced the cancellation of the event.
A spokesperson for the museum emphasized their unwavering commitment to freedom of expression, stating that the museum could not allow one artwork to be prohibited without impacting the integrity of the entire exhibition.
'The museum will not allow itself to be censored,' the spokesperson remarked.
