Disappearance of 16-Year-Old Zoé and Her Infant Sparks Investigation in France
Authorities issue a public appeal as concerns grow for the wellbeing of the missing pair.
Zoé, a 16-year-old girl, and her one-month-old baby, Inaya, have been missing for three weeks, prompting a police investigation into their disappearance.
The pair was last seen after Zoé left a mother-child facility in Belfort, located in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France, where she had been placed by child welfare services (Aide sociale à l'enfance).
Following her pregnancy, Zoé transitioned through various care facilities due to her troubled background, including previous instances of running away.
Reports indicate that she had been residing in the mother-child center in Belfort, which is also the residence of her mother.
Authorities have expressed concern regarding the health and safety of the infant, noting that both Zoé's substance use history and her emotional fragility may pose risks.
During her time at the center, Zoé reportedly reduced her substance use after giving birth and displayed an ability to meet her baby's needs, according to staff members.
However, concerns remain about her temperament and ability to cope, with reports of her losing patience when dealing with Inaya.
A public appeal has been issued by authorities for information regarding their whereabouts.
The prosecutor's office in Belfort stated, "We do not know where they are sleeping, and we do not know if the baby is safe," highlighting that Zoé lacks financial resources.
It has been raised that there is a risk of deterioration in Zoé's mental health due to her previous substance use during pregnancy.
Reports suggest that Zoé may have fled the facility after an incident involving a staff member, leading her to leave for a stroll with Inaya; she has not returned since, and it is believed she may have traveled to the Paris region.
Law enforcement is urging any witnesses to come forward and contact the Belfort police station directly.
