Electricity Outage in Alpes-Maritimes Linked to Deliberate Sabotage
A significant power outage affecting Cannes and surrounding areas has been confirmed as the result of intentional damage to a high-voltage pylon.
A substantial electricity outage in the Alpes-Maritimes region has been attributed to malicious actions, according to local authorities.
The outage, which has impacted Cannes and parts of the surrounding area since Saturday, is linked to the deliberate sabotage of a high-voltage electricity pylon in Villeneuve-Loubet.
Three of the four supporting pillars of the pylon were reportedly severed.
The Grasse public prosecutor confirmed the details of the sabotage, stating that it was necessary to deactivate the line in order to enable intervention efforts, which subsequently resulted in a widespread power failure affecting approximately 160,000 households in Cannes and neighboring regions.
Eric Ciotti, a member of the National Assembly for Alpes-Maritimes, expressed the gravity of the situation on social media, characterizing the events as potentially terrorist in nature and calling for transparency and prompt responses from authorities.
He indicated that the blackout coincided with significant events, including the conclusion of the Cannes Film Festival, where the prestigious Palme d'Or was to be awarded later that day.
In the lead-up to this incident, a fire had broken out at a transformer station of RTE in Tanneron, Var, raising concerns about safety at electrical infrastructure in the area.
Following the identification of the sabotage, the prefect of Alpes-Maritimes announced that efforts to restore electricity were underway and that approximately 60,000 homes had regained power by 3:30 PM.
The prosecutor clarified that only one pylon was targeted in the incident, countering earlier reports suggesting multiple pylons had been affected.
Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the damage and the responsible parties.
