Emmanuel Macron Expected to Make Official Visit to Monaco
French President Macron may visit Monaco during UN Ocean Summit in June 2025.
French President Emmanuel Macron attended the funeral of Monaco's Minister of State Didier Guillaume on January 23, 2025. Guillaume, who served as France's Minister of Agriculture from 2018 to 2020, passed away on January 17, 2025. Following this event, Macron is anticipated to return to Monaco for a state visit coinciding with the United Nations Ocean Summit, scheduled to take place in Nice from June 9 to June 13, 2025. Reports suggest that the president may travel to Monaco over the weekend of June 7 and 8, 2025. This visit appears to be more likely than a previously planned visit announced in October 2019, which did not materialize.
Senator Hélène Conway-Mouret, representing French citizens abroad, mentioned this potential visit while in the principality on March 29, 2025. The last state visit by a French president to Monaco was by François Mitterrand in 1984 under Prince Rainier III's reign.
State visits are significant diplomatic engagements between nations, typically involving ceremonial activities, and are seen as the highest form of official contact.
Prior French presidents have visited Monaco for official occasions, including Jacques Chirac in 1997, Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, and François Hollande in 2013.
