Laurent Hottiaux officially took office as the new prefect of Alpes-Maritimes on May 19, 2025, succeeding Hugues Moutouh.
His appointment, which was made by President Emmanuel Macron on April 28, 2025, follows a recommendation from the Minister of the Interior.
In his inaugural press conference, Hottiaux articulated his primary objectives for the Alpes-Maritimes department, which include a strong focus on maintaining order and safety in the region.
Hottiaux highlighted several key areas of concern, including a concerted effort against daily insecurity, drug trafficking, organized crime, and the management of the border.
He also emphasized his commitment to addressing irregular immigration, as well as initiatives aimed at preventing separatism and radicalization.
Recognizing the lasting impact of recent natural disasters, he placed significant importance on civil security, recalling the devastation caused by storms Alex and Aline.
Additionally, Hottiaux pledged to support local businesses and foster economic development, focusing on employment, tourism, culture, housing, and transportation.
His priorities also include the development of neighborhoods, assistance for rural and mountainous communities, and initiatives for ecological transition and water resource preservation.
As part of his broader agenda, he is preparing for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled for 2030, and the Oceans Summit set to take place in Nice from June 9 to June 13, 2025. In his remarks, Hottiaux extended an olive branch to neighboring Italy and Monaco, expressing a desire to enhance cross-border cooperation between the regions.
