Italy Confirms Validity of Monaco Driving Licenses

Italy Confirms Validity of Monaco Driving Licenses

Italian authorities clarify that Monaco driving licenses are recognized in Italy without the need for an international permit.
The Italian government has officially confirmed that Monaco driving licenses are valid on Italian territory, eliminating previous misunderstandings among residents of the principality.

This announcement follows a meeting of the joint administrative cooperation commission held in Monaco on May 12, co-chaired by Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Government Counsellor-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Monaco, and Giorgio Silli, Undersecretary of State at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Italian authorities, based on the Vienna Convention of November 8, 1968, on road traffic, Monaco driving licenses are fully recognized in Italy.

Importantly, it is not necessary for Monaco drivers to possess an additional international driving permit when traveling in Italy.

This clarification is expected to resolve uncertainties that arose after several incidents where Monaco residents faced scrutiny from Italian police regarding the validity of their driving licenses.

Reports had included instances shared via social media where Italian officers questioned the authenticity of Monaco-issued permits.

Discussions during the meeting also encompassed permits for Monaco-based companies regarding the transport of goods into Italy.

Ongoing exchanges will continue within the framework of the joint commission established by the 2012 bilateral agreement on international transport regulation.

Additionally, health care cooperation was a topic of discussion, with both delegations exploring the expansion of medical care services in the Principality for Italian residents from Liguria.

Economic development was another focus, including emphasis on investments from Monaco in Italy and vice versa.

A joint economic forum is set to be organized to address these mutual interests.

The next session of the joint administrative cooperation commission is slated to take place in Rome, with the date yet to be determined.
