New Night Train Service Launches Between Rome and Marseille via Monaco
The 'Espresso Riviera' train will commence operations in July 2025, connecting major Mediterranean destinations.
Starting July 4, 2025, a new overnight train service named 'Espresso Riviera' will operate between Rome and Marseille, with Friday departures from Rome and Saturday returns from Marseille.
The service, initiated by FS Treni Turistici Italiani, a subsidiary of the Italian railway company Trenitalia, will travel overnight from Rome to Genoa and continue during the day along the Mediterranean coast to Marseille.
The train will depart from Rome Termini at 19:57, with a modified departure time of 21:45 on the inaugural run.
It is scheduled to arrive in Marseille at 13:57 the following day.
The return journey from Marseille will commence at 14:46 on Saturdays, arriving back in Rome at 06:48 on Sunday morning.
The Espresso Riviera service will make several stops at major Côte d'Azur cities.
On the outbound journey, stops will include Menton, Monaco–Monte-Carlo, Nice, Cannes, Saint-Raphaël-Valescure, and Toulon, with disembarkation permitted only at these locations.
For the return trip, passengers can board at these same stops.
Night travelers will have the option of individual or double sleeper cars, as well as compartments for four, which can be privatized.
During the day journey from Genoa, the train will offer private lounges and first and second-class seats with sea views.
Last summer, FS Treni Turistici Italiani attempted to operate a tourist train between Nice and Milan, which included a scheduled stop in Monaco.
However, the plan was hindered due to the use of diesel locomotives, banned in the underground Monaco station for ecological reasons.
This year, the company has confirmed that the Monaco–Monte-Carlo stop will be included in the new service.
