Nice Hosts Key Meeting on 2030 Winter Olympics Bid
Local officials express optimism about the suitability of Nice as a host city for the French Alps Olympic Games.
On March 31, 2025, Edgar Grospiron, the president of the organizing committee for the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in the French Alps, met with local officials in Nice, including the city's mayor, Christian Estrosi, to discuss the city's bid for the Games.
The meeting took place against a backdrop of enthusiasm for Nice's potential role in the event, which encompasses the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions.
Mayor Estrosi expressed satisfaction with the discussions, highlighting that both Grospiron and the Minister of Sports were impressed with the bid's framework, developed in collaboration with experts from the National Olympic Committee.
Estrosi emphasized the strategic importance of key sites, particularly the ice sports area located in Nice's Var plain, which is projected to account for approximately 50% of Winter Olympics ticket sales.
The heart of the proposed venue includes iconic locations such as the city center and the Promenade des Anglais, where various ceremonies are expected to take place.
Estrosi noted that the financial implications for the local community would be minimal, with the organizing committee (Cojo) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (Solideo) covering 80% of the infrastructure costs.
This funding is intended to ensure the longevity of facilities after the Games, including a new ice rink to replace the aging Jean-Bouin rink.
The meeting reflected a concerted effort to secure the necessary support and resources to position Nice as a prime host city for the Winter Olympics, reinforcing the project's feasibility and local benefits.
