Christian Estrosi Critiques Coordination Issues Following UN Ocean Conference in Nice
The Mayor of Nice addresses operational challenges faced by local volunteers and state services during the UN Ocean Conference.
The third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) concluded on June 13, 2025, in Nice, having brought significant international visibility to the city for several days.
The event attracted around 5,000 national police, gendarmes, and military personnel aimed at ensuring security across various venues, alongside nearly 6,000 municipal agents and more than 500 volunteers who contributed local support.
In an interview reflecting on the conference, Christian Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice, raised concerns regarding the coordination between state-mandated services and local teams.
He described instances of miscommunication that hindered operational efficiency.
Estrosi expressed gratitude for the heightened security provided during the event but emphasized that the treatment of local volunteers was often inadequate, leading to frustration among those involved.
He noted that volunteers sometimes faced confusion, having to respond to contradictory orders in high temperatures.
This chaotic environment, according to Estrosi, could have been alleviated had the municipal authorities been given equal standing with state services in the operational framework.
He highlighted the significance of local knowledge and expertise in facilitating smoother event management.
Estrosi recognized the commitment of local volunteers and municipal agents, stating, 'I am extremely grateful for the dedication displayed by those who ensured the event's success.
However, the coordination issues experienced could have been avoided.' He further mentioned plans to hold a ceremony to commend the efforts of the community members who participated in the international event.
