Expansion of Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou's Food Programme in the UK
The Stelios Foundation commits £1 million to support Trussell Trust food banks across the country.
Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has announced the expansion of his ‘Food From the Heart’ programme in the United Kingdom, marking the initiative's first move beyond its original Mediterranean operations.
The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation has pledged over £1 million in food donations to the Trussell Trust, which operates more than 1,400 food bank sites in the UK.
Launched in 2013, the programme currently functions from 12 distribution points in Cyprus and Greece, having distributed 42 million food items to date.
The UK expansion addresses documented food insecurity affecting 9.3 million people across Britain, including 3 million children, as reported by Trussell Trust research.
The financial contribution will enable the purchase of chili con carne cans from Kiril Mischeff Limited under the Rodina brand, which will be distributed through Trussell’s partner, Food and Community Trust, to over 50 food banks nationwide.
Each can, retailing for approximately £2, will feature co-branding with the logos of the Stelios Foundation, Trussell, and Rodina.
Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou expressed his enthusiasm about the programme’s expansion, stating that he was pleased to partner with Trussell to support food banks throughout the UK after assisting those in need in Cyprus and Greece for the past 12 years.
Emma Revie, Chief Executive of Trussell Trust, acknowledged the partnership, stating that the support from the Stelios Foundation is crucial for food banks which assist individuals struggling to afford essentials.
She highlighted the hard work of the food bank teams in providing vital emergency support to their communities, reinforced by such generous partnerships.
The food bank initiative forms part of Sir Stelios’s broader philanthropic portfolio, which spans four key regions where he has lived and worked: the UK, Greece, Cyprus, and Monaco.
Current programmes include annual awards of £300,000 for young British entrepreneurs, £200,000 in awards for disabled entrepreneurs in partnership with Leonard Cheshire, and bi-community awards promoting cooperation between Greek and Turkish Cypriot businesses.
In Monaco, the Foundation maintains a conference room available for non-profit organisations and has supported various local initiatives, including donations to homeless services and environmental conservation efforts.
Recent activities include a donation of €100,000 to the Heritage Foundation for the restoration of the Madone Chapel in Menton, as well as charity dinners that have raised significant funds for both the WWF and the Prince Albert II Foundation.
