French Tourist Arrested in Iceland Suspected of Killing Husband and Daughter
A woman in her sixties has been detained following the deaths of her husband and daughter at a luxury hotel in Reykjavik.
A French woman in her sixties was arrested on Saturday, June 14, in Iceland, where police suspect her of killing her husband and their daughter while they were on holiday on the Scandinavian island.
Local television reported the incident as authorities investigated the two fatalities.
The suspect was found alive but also suffering from stab wounds, according to the national public broadcaster RÚV. The man and his daughter were discovered dead at a luxury hotel in Reykjavik on Saturday morning and reportedly showed signs of injuries, including stab wounds.
Aevar Palmi Palmason, an officer with the Reykjavik police, stated, 'A further investigation will determine the type of injuries sustained.'
The police had not confirmed any familial relation between the suspect and the victims, and they were unavailable for comment on Sunday.
The deceased individuals have not been publicly identified.
A police statement indicated that the Reykjavik court had placed the woman in provisional detention until June 20 as part of an inquiry into the deaths of two French tourists at a downtown hotel.
The statement clarified that 'the woman in detention was traveling with the deceased when the incident occurred.'
Murders and fatal acts of violence are uncommon in Iceland, which consistently ranks highly on the Global Peace Index since its inception in 2008, demonstrating very low crime rates.
However, recent years have witnessed a number of shootings and stab attacks, attributed by police to criminal gangs, which have disrupted the typically tranquil environment of the North Atlantic island.
