Health Authorities Warn Against Fake Blood Sugar Monitors
French health officials alert on misleading devices that claim to measure blood sugar without needles.
Health authorities in France have issued a warning regarding devices that claim to measure blood sugar levels without the use of needles, including certain wearable technologies.
The National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) and the Directorate-General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) stated that these devices pose a significant risk to diabetic patients by providing inaccurate glucose readings.
These devices, marketed as smartwatches, rings, or finger monitors, have gained attention from athletes and online influencers, purportedly to enhance performance or manage weight.
The agencies noted that they have been alerted to an increase in online and social media offers for products claiming to provide 'non-invasive' blood sugar measurements, relying on supposed technological advancements.
However, officials emphasized that the only reliable blood sugar measurement devices are those that analyze a drop of blood or those that use a filament inserted under the patient's skin.
The so-called 'non-invasive' sensors may mislead users, potentially obscuring crucial issues such as hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, which could lead to delays in treatment and serious health risks, including coma or death.
Authorities indicated that targeted websites have removed the misleading advertisements and reminded consumers that they may request refunds for misleading products.
This warning is separate from broader medical concerns regarding the inappropriate use of effective glucose monitoring devices, such as the Freestyle Libre from Abbott Laboratories.
It is highlighted that continuous blood sugar monitoring is relevant primarily for diabetic patients.
For healthy individuals, monitoring blood sugar levels can be unnecessary and may lead to misinterpretations, potentially resulting in inappropriate dietary changes.
