Institut du Droit Économique de la Mer Commemorates 40 Years of Maritime Law
International Conference Highlights Contemporary Challenges in Maritime Usage
In 2025, the Institut du Droit Économique de la Mer (Indemer) will celebrate its 40th anniversary.
Established in 1985, Indemer addresses legal, economic, social, and environmental issues related to the use of maritime spaces and marine environments.
To mark this milestone, an international symposium was held on May 8 and 9, 2025, at the Médian Beach Plaza Hotel in Monaco.
The conference focused on 'Contemporary Issues in Maritime Usage.'
During the symposium, interim Minister of State Isabelle Berro-Amadeï delivered remarks that honored Prince Rainier III (1923-2005), the founder of Indemer.
She noted that the institute was created to 'promote the dissemination of knowledge related to the sea in its legal, economic, and scientific dimensions.'
Prince Albert II also spoke, recalling that 'Indemer was founded in 1985 by my father, Prince Rainier III, inspired by the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982.' Since the establishment of the institute, the usage of the sea has evolved significantly and is expected to continue changing in the coming decades, particularly due to the increasing necessity of balancing global economic exchanges with environmental protection.
