The exhibition 'Fushikaden – Issei Suda' showcases the acclaimed work of the Japanese photographer, offering insights into contemporary Japanese society.
The Mougins Photography Center is currently hosting the exhibition _Fushikaden – Issei Suda_, which will be available for viewing until June 8, 2025. This exhibition features the work of renowned Japanese photographer Issei Suda, who lived from 1940 to 2019. Suda began his career in 1967 as a photographer for the experimental theater troupe Tenjo Sajiki, founded by Shuji Terayama, before becoming an independent photographer in 1971.
Curated in collaboration with the GwinZegal art center in Guingamp and the Akio Nagasawa Gallery in Tokyo, this exhibition highlights Suda's iconic series _Fushikaden_, a title derived from a concept in traditional Noh theater.
The images presented in the exhibition capture candid street scenes illuminated by a distinctive summer light, revealing both the stark beauty and sometimes harsh realities of everyday life in Japan.
Suda draws inspiration from Hollywood screenwriting and the films of Orson Welles, known for his narrative depth and cinematic techniques.
His photographs encapsulate fleeting moments that navigate the line between reality and fiction.
Each image offers a narrative that encourages visitors to delve into the various dimensions of Japanese society.
The exhibition is located at the Mougins Photography Center, situated at 43 Rue de l’Église, and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 1 PM to 6 PM. Admission is priced at €6, while entry is free for individuals under 18 years old.
