Méditerranée 2050: An Immersive Exploration of the Ocean's Future
The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco unveils an interactive exhibition aimed at raising awareness about the Mediterranean Sea's ecological challenges and potential solutions by 2050.
The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco has launched "Méditerranée 2050," an immersive exhibition designed to engage visitors in the future of the Mediterranean Sea.
The exhibition invites attendees to embark on a temporal journey beginning at the entrance of the "Temple of the Sea," where they will experience a virtual mission aboard a submersible, exploring a vision of the Mediterranean as it might be in 2050.
Upon entering, participants are immersed in a spectacle of monumental projections that showcase vibrant Mediterranean ecosystems.
Iconic marine species including dolphins, loggerhead turtles, barracudas, swordfish, and sperm whales animate the surroundings in a 360-degree environment, utilizing advanced immersive technology.
The exhibition is divided into four thematic spaces, each led by marine mammals acting as ambassadors for the sea.
The first area, _Salon Oceanomania_, functions as a cabinet of marine curiosities that delves into the origins and evolution of the Mediterranean Sea, featuring a monumental whale sculpture that interacts with visitors to share captivating stories and essential data.
Next, _Espace Oceano Monaco_ outlines Monaco's historical commitment to marine preservation, spanning over a century through the efforts of the Principality's rulers.
This area includes an interactive game where visitors assume the role of a Marine Protected Area manager tasked with making decisions to restore biodiversity.
As visitors progress, they enter _Oceano Odyssey_, which projects a regenerated Mediterranean brimming with life, showcasing the potential for 30% of its spaces to be protected by 2050. The immersive recreation illustrates a vibrant future scenario made possible through cutting-edge projection techniques.
The final space, _My Oceano Med_, invites participants to interact directly with the virtual environment.
Through choices made within the experience, visitors can witness the restoration of ecosystems, reflecting the successes observed in well-managed Marine Protected Areas today.
This exhibition extends beyond mere observation; it aims to mobilize collective action.
The Mediterranean Sea is home to over 17,000 recorded species, surpassing the biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef, yet it faces severe threats from climate change, with warming rates 20% faster than the global average, compounded by its semi-closed and shallow nature.
An interactive component encourages participants to tackle challenges, create their virtual Marine Protected Areas, and contribute to a digital mural counting engaged visitors in real-time.
Additionally, the exhibition offers a web app, My Oceano Med, allowing individuals to create their own virtual Marine Protected Areas, engage in challenges, and contribute to Mediterranean preservation remotely.
Confronted with pollution, climate change, and resource overexploitation, the Mediterranean is recognized as one of the most threatened seas today.
The exhibition emphasizes the importance of collective action in shaping the future of this shared marine environment.
Through engaging displays, visitors are invited to envision a future where the Mediterranean has regained balance, highlighting the critical role of seagrass meadows, which support diverse marine life.
This vision aligns with ongoing scientific efforts, innovative approaches, and the proactive actions of institutions like the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, indicating a potential pathway toward a more sustainable future for the Mediterranean Sea.
