Monaco Telecom Promotes VoLTE Adoption to Enhance Mobile Network
The telecom operator encourages customers to enable VoLTE to improve call quality and network reliability.
Monaco Telecom is ramping up efforts to promote the adoption of Voice over LTE (VoLTE), a technology designed to enhance mobile call quality.
Despite being on the market for over a decade and first launched in France in 2015, many subscribers have yet to utilize this service, which provides significant improvements in network performance.
During a press conference held on March 20, 2025, Martin Péronnet, CEO of Monaco Telecom, emphasized the advantages of VoLTE and the company's initiatives to encourage broader usage.
VoLTE allows voice calls to be made over the 4G network rather than relying on older 3G and 2G infrastructures.
This results in faster call setup times—up to twice as fast—along with superior audio quality and fewer call interruptions, particularly beneficial for users in border areas, which have been a common issue for Monaco residents and visitors.
Additionally, VoLTE supports continued mobile data usage during a call, a limitation present with traditional calling methods.
Currently, 88% of Monaco Telecom customers own smartphones compatible with VoLTE, yet only 48% have activated this feature.
The operator aims to improve these numbers by highlighting the straightforward activation process.
For iPhone users, VoLTE can be activated through the settings under 'Cellular Data', while Android users can enable it through the 'Connections' menu and mobile network settings.
Péronnet noted that since the introduction of VoLTE, complaints regarding network issues have decreased by a factor of seven.
However, some disruptions remain, particularly due to the complexity of the network, which is affected by the principality's topography, urban density, and interference from the French network.
Monaco Telecom has identified several areas, including the Quartier des Fleurs, where enhancements are planned.
The rollout of VoLTE in Monaco was made possible following a relaxation of technical restrictions imposed by Orange, the operator hosting Monaco Telecom's network in France.
These constraints had hindered the seamless use of the service for Monaco subscribers traveling across borders.
The easing of these restrictions occurred in anticipation of the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, with the VoLTE service now considered stable and fully operational.
Monaco Telecom is actively working to encourage more subscribers to activate the free VoLTE feature, providing assistance and information through various channels, including in-store support and customer service.
Alongside promoting VoLTE, the operator is set to continue its investments in mobile network expansion, having deployed eight antennas and 18 small cells in 2024 to address coverage issues, particularly along the borders of the principality and in the Quartier des Fleurs.
Future reinforcement efforts will focus on the neighborhoods of Moneghetti, Sainte-Dévote, and Monaco-Ville.
