Tragic Loss: Carol and Bertrand Louveau Die in Myanmar Earthquake
Residents of Le Beausset mourn the unexpected passing of a local couple during a devastating earthquake in Myanmar.
Carol and Bertrand Louveau, aged 53 and 55, respectively, have tragically died in an earthquake that struck Myanmar.
The couple was staying in Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, at the time of the disaster, contradicting earlier reports suggesting they were in the capital, Naypyidaw.
News of their untimely demise has sent shockwaves throughout the village of Le Beausset, where they were well-known for their active participation in local political and sociocultural life.
Le Beausset's Mayor, Édouard Friedler, expressed his deep sorrow regarding the couple's death, particularly honoring Carol Louveau’s contributions as a former local council member responsible for children and schools.
Friedler remarked on her commitment to the community, emphasizing that her dedication would be remembered by many residents.
Jean-Claude Richard, the former mayor who served from 2008 to 2014, also shared his grief over the loss of Carol, who was part of his municipal team.
He highlighted her effectiveness as a school advisor and her compassionate nature, which contributed to a successful term in office.
The emotional response from the community includes voices like that of Simplice Leumalieu, a former head of the municipal sports service, who noted Carol's significant role in creating programs like the Discovery Club for children during school holidays.
Nathalie Avril, a municipal youth information officer, expressed her shock, describing Carol as a dedicated and generous individual.
Both Carol and Bertrand Louveau had actively engaged in local initiatives and contributed meaningfully to the fabric of community life in Le Beausset.
In reaction to the couple's death, Mayor Friedler has criticized the Myanmar authorities for their decision not to allow the repatriation of Carol and Bertrand's bodies, complicating the grieving process for their family and friends.
The municipality has offered support to the Louveaus' daughters, Victoria and Bérénice, and a condolence register will be made available at the town hall for residents wishing to pay their respects.
An official homage will also be conducted during the next municipal council meeting.
