Monaco Police Commander Killed in Traffic Accident: Driver Sentenced to Suspended Sentence
A 46-year-old man receives a two-year suspended prison sentence following the fatal accident in Èze.
In September 2021, Christophe David, a 44-year-old chief police commander from Monaco, died in a tragic traffic accident in Èze while commuting to work on his scooter.
He was struck by a microcar driven by a 46-year-old health professional, who had lost his driving license six months prior due to speeding.
During the trial held at the correctional court in Nice on February 25, the defendant acknowledged his responsibility for the crash, citing a loss of control over the vehicle.
He stated, 'The sole generator of the accident was my lack of control of the vehicle coming out of the turn.' He expressed heartfelt apologies to the family of the victim.
According to an accidentology expert, the defendant was traveling at 65 km/h at the time of the incident, exceeding the vehicle's speed limit of 45 km/h, when he lost control.
The lawyer representing the victim's partner, Me Marie Seguin, condemned the defendant's irresponsibility and emphasized the profound bond between Christophe David and his fiancée. She articulated the emotional pain of the bereaved with the poignant statement, 'I want nothing because nothing can bring him back.
I want nothing because Christophe was worth more than everything.' In defense, Me Laure Teresi attempted to downplay her client’s culpability, citing structural defects in microcars.
The prosecutor recommended a road safety awareness course and the annulment of the defendant’s driving license.
Ultimately, he was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison, with the sentence fully suspended.
His driving license has been annulled, and he is prohibited from reapplying for it for at least six months.
Following the court's ruling on Friday, the sister of the victim and the defendant engaged in a conversation outside the palace.
Me Laure Teresi remarked on the unusual nature of their interaction, stating, 'It's quite exceptional to see this; they are consoling each other because there is a lot of pain on both sides.'
