AS Monaco Overcomes Auxerre 4-2, Temporarily Ties with Marseille in Ligue 1 Standings
Monaco's comeback win sees them momentarily match Marseille, who are scheduled to play Lyon later this evening.
On February 1, 2025, AS Monaco secured a 4-2 victory against AJ Auxerre in a Ligue 1 match held at the Stade Louis-II, marking the 21st matchday of the season.
The win elevates Monaco to the second position in the league table, temporarily equalling Marseille's point total until Marseille's match against Lyon later that day in the Velodrome.
During the first half, Auxerre demonstrated resilience and took a 2-1 lead into the break.
Monaco initially struggled to penetrate Auxerre's defense, managing only one notable chance early on when a cross from Vanderson found Biereth, who set up Mawissa, but his shot was saved by Auxerre's goalkeeper, Léon.
Monaco eventually opened the scoring in the 35th minute through a corner kick taken by Camara.
The set-piece was poorly cleared, enabling Kehrer to strike from outside the box, putting Monaco ahead 1-0. However, Auxerre responded shortly after, equalizing in the 38th minute when Diomandé struck from close range following a series of passes.
Further complicating matters for Monaco, a foul by Zakaria led to a penalty for Auxerre just before halftime.
Initially stopped by Monaco's goalkeeper, Majecki, the penalty was ordered to be re-taken due to improper positioning, and Jubal converted the second attempt, giving Auxerre a 2-1 lead at the break.
In response to the halftime deficit, Monaco's coach Adi Hütter implemented a tactical change, moving to a 4-4-2 formation by substituting in Henrique, Embolo, and Magassa for Mawissa, Golovin, and Camara.
The change proved effective as Biereth quickly leveled the match with a well-placed shot in the 57th minute after receiving a pass from Embolo.
Biereth then gave Monaco the lead in the 63rd minute, scoring again from a Henrique cross.
He completed his hat-trick shortly after, following a run by Embolo that drew re-direction from the Auxerre goalkeeper, allowing Biereth to find the net for the final score of 4-2 in the 65th minute.
Despite the victory, the match showcased some defensive vulnerabilities for Monaco, particularly in the first half.
The result allows them to maintain pressure on Marseille, who are positioned directly above them in the league standings.
